Mechanical watches are marvels of engineering and can run for the best part of a decade without intervention. However, to keep your luxury timepiece best maintained, it is strongly recommend that your watch is serviced in line with the manufacturer’s servicing schedule.

If your watch is due a service, keeping poor time or is experiencing a fault, your watch will require overhauling.

Overhauling a mechanical/automatic watch involves completely disassembling the movement, down to the last screw. All components are then cleaned in a specialised cleaning machine that removes all traces of the expired lubrication and fouling.

Every single component is then meticulously scrutinised under magnification and any components that no longer meet the manufacturer’s specification are replaced with new parts. The movement is then rebuilt by hand, piece by piece, by watchmakers that know the calibre intimately. Highly specific lubricants are applied to all of the friction points, it is not uncommon for 5-6 different grades of lubricants to be used in modern Swiss movements.

The movement is then carefully adjusted to obtain the best possible timekeeping the movement is capable of.

Upon completion, the case of the watch is resealed, all of the gaskets that keep your watch sealed against dirt and moisture are inspected, cleaned and lubricated with any worn/damaged gaskets being replaced. To confirm water resistance, the watch is subjected to a two part vacuum and pressure test.

The watch will then be tested for up to 7 days, on a test apparatus that simulates the motion of a human wrist. The watch is monitored for accurate timekeeping, correct function of the date and other complications as well as its power reserve.

Whilst the movement is being serviced, many of our clients choose to have the case and bracelet refurbished/polished, so that when the overhaul is complete their watch is not only functioning like new, but is looking like it did when it left the factory.
